- Box Puppets! Help your child see the beauty and functionality of recyclables by creating marionette puppets out of milk cartoons!
What you'll need:
1 milk carton for each person
Paper
String
Markers and other material to decorate the puppets.
Glue
2 Sticks per person about 8 inches long.
A pencil
1 square of felt or thick construction paper for each puppet
Hole punch
Help your homeschoolers make a hole the size of a dime in each side of the milk carton toward the top. This is where the arms will go.
Take your felt square or construction paper and draw 2 small mitten hands and 2 small boot feet and cut them out. Then take the hole punch and punch a hole into the top of each one.
To make arms and legs that move, wrap long strips of paper around a pencil or marker and glue or tape the strips in place. Once the glue is dry remove the pencil and you'll end up with a hollow paper tube. Make four of these for each puppet.
Thread a long piece of string through the holes that you cut in the sides of the milk carton. Then attach your arms by threading the paper tubes onto the strings and tie them off to the felt hands you made earlier. Do the same for the legs.
Have your kids decorate their puppets anyway they want to. They can use markers, crayons, construction paper and basically anything you can find around the house. Once they're decorated, attach individual strings to the top of the milk carton, each hand, and each foot. Then attach these strings to your sticks so that you can make your puppet come to life!
