Back to School Projects

Time to start back into the school year and the best way to introduce curriculum is to disguise it as Art! Get all of your homeschoolers involved with these fun and creative activities... .

  • What's that sound? Help your child identify common household sounds or you can even get adventurous and tape sounds from around the world.

    What you'll need:
    Tape recorder
    Blank tape

Here's a great activity that can be personalized for anyone and any age. When your homeschoolers are a busy doing something else you can go around the house and tape sounds that you hear every day. Some great examples of this are: plates being stacked, doors being closed, garage doors, door bells, phone ringing, light switches, fish tanks, vacuums, dogs barking, and anything else you can find around.

Once you get them recorded have you children sit down as a group and identify the sounds. There are a couple of different ways to do it. You can either see who can yell the correct answer out first or you can have them write their answers on a sheet of paper and see who gets the most correct.

You can have your kids go around and record sounds for you to guess. I've had a couple of homeschoolers make tapes for each other and it gets as challenging as they are creative.

Fun Twist: Be creative with sounds you record. My son and I made a recording using "pretend" sounds we made ourselves for things like dinosaurs. We even used the t.v. to help out too! The discovery channel had a great feature on the amazon that was a lot of fun!
